2019 EASO Awards for Scientific Excellence

ECO2019, EASO’s 26th European Congress on Obesity, will take place in Glasgow, Scotland from the 28th of  April to the 1st of May 2019.  The following EASO Awards will be presented at ECO2019: 

 

The deadline for receipt of applications Friday 28 January 2019.  All interested parties, and especially New Investigators, are encouraged to apply for these awards.  Please note that you can apply for several awards at one time, using the 2019 EASO Awards Application Form, available below.

 

EASO Friedrich Wassermann Award

The EASO Friedrich Wassermann Award is a highly prestigious award that recognises outstanding and sustained scientific contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of obesity. This is a lifetime award for Senior European researchers. The award is presented at every second European Congress on Obesity and recognises obesity specialists who have shown dedication and have contributed significantly to the field of obesity.

To be eligible for the Wassermann Award the applicant must:

EASO encourages all affiliated National Associations to nominate candidates for this Award. No self- nominations will be accepted.

Nomination of candidates should include:

The Award winner will be invited to present their research during the Awards Plenary session at ECO2019. The winner will be awarded complimentary full congress registration, three nights’ accommodation, and return economy flights from place of residence to the congress.

Nominations should be submitted using the form below. The deadline for receipt of applications is 28 January 2019.  Applications received after this date will NOT be considered.

 

EASO New Investigator Awards

Four EASO New Investigators Awards will be presented at ECO2019 – in Basic Science, Clinical Research, Public Health and Childhood Obesity Research.  The New Investigator Awards recognise ‘rising stars’ in the field of obesity through their contributions to these four topic areas, and are highly regarded throughout the scientific community.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 28 January 2019 – late applications will NOT be considered.  Award Winners will be announced in March 2019 – all applicants will be contacted by email to announce the EASO Executive Committee decision.

To be eligible for the New Investigator Awards you must:

Award winners will be invited to present their research in a 10 minute lecture during the Plenary Awards Session of ECO2019. Winners will be awarded complimentary full congress registration, three nights’ accommodation, and return economy flights from place of residence to the congress. Award applicants MUST agree to submit a relevant review paper to Obesity Facts, the official journal of EASO, within 3 months of ECO2019.

Guidance for your application:
Within your application you should highlight your top publications (up to five) for which you have been the first author, provide a short description outlining your work, and highlight how your work has contributed to the field of obesity. The originality of the work and the contribution to science will be considered as part of the application. Please give details of the number of oral presentations at national and international level that you have given and include a list of awards and prizes obtained. Please also include a list of additional publications (i.e. not including your top publications noted above) that are related to obesity that you may feel strengthen your application and highlight any other significant achievements to date.  Please note: You DO NOT need to be nominated for these awards.  EASO encourages all New Investigators to apply.  Please apply using the form below.

EASO Travel Grants and Youth Hostel Accommodation

In 2019 EASO will offer a limited number of travel grants to accepted abstract presenters.  Each grant will comprise a free full registration plus up to €500 towards travel and accommodation.  EASO Travel Grants are only available to those who would otherwise be precluded from attending the ECO for financial reasons.   The deadline for receipt of applications is 28 January 2019 – late applications will NOT be considered.  All applicants will be informed of the EASO Executive Committee decision by email in March 2019.

At ECO2019 EASO is also able to offer free accommodation at the Glasgow Youth Hostel.  Situated in the popular West End, overlooking Kelvingrove Park and Glasgow University, Glasgow Youth Hostel is the perfect base for groups and individuals looking to attend the ECO and to explore the city.  We are pleased to announce that EASO has reserved the entire Youth Hostel for the duration of ECO2019, and will offer free accommodation to new investigators, students and delegates who may need travel support.   Accommodation at the Youth Hostel is shared accommodation and therefore suitable if you plan to travel as a group. 

Guidance for your application:
In your application you should justify why you require support to travel to the ECO or free accommodation. Please include also a short description outlining your work and your contributions to the scientific community and field of obesity research. Please apply via the form below.

EASO NIU Best Thesis Award

The New Investigators United (NIU) Best Thesis Award aims to recognise new researchers and their contribution to the obesity field. New and younger scientists are encouraged to apply for the award to gain recognition for their thesis at an international level.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 28 January 2019 – late applications will NOT be considered.  Results will be announced in March 2019 – all applicants will be contacted by email to announce the NIU Board decision.

To be eligible for the NIU Best Thesis Award you must:

The NIU Best Thesis Award finalists will be invited to present their research during the NIU session at ECO2019, and will be offered free registration to do so.  The NIU Best Thesis Award Winner will be judged and announced during the session.  The winner will receive an award certificate and a €500 cash prize.

Guidance for your application:
Within your application you should provide a short description outlining the work that was covered in your thesis, highlight any publications related to your thesis that you have been an author of and highlight how your work has contributed to the field of obesity. The originality of the work and the contribution to science will be considered as part of the application. Please apply via the form below, you should also send your full thesis to [email protected].
